Referred as the safari capital of the world, Nairobi is the Capital City of Kenya and came about as a result of the railway construction by the British. During the construction of the Railway from the coast to Lake Victoria, engineers found a swampy place, named by the Maasai as ‘Enkare Neerobi’- place of cool waters
Lake Nakuru National Park was gazetted as a national park in 1968. It supports a spectacular array of wildlife including 400 bird species, over 50 mammal species and over 50 species of flora. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most famous lake in Kenya. Whilst Lake Nakuru is a pretty park with good game viewing, its small size and location (proximity to Nairobi, on the main route for safaris visiting both the north and Maasai Mara) does lay it open to being rather busy and over-crowded.
The park was declared a Rhino Sanctuary in 1987 and it’s a home to over 25 Eastern Black Rhinoceroses and around 70 Southern White Rhinoceroses. However, Lake Nakuru is most famous for the flocks of up to 2 million greater and lesser flamingoes that nest on its shores.
The park was established in 1949 to protect Mount Kenya, the wildlife, and the surrounding environment which forms a habitat for wild animals as well as acting as a water catchment in Kenya.
The park hosts the tallest mountain in Kenya and the second largest in Africa. Three major peaks dot the mountainous scenes. These are; Batian(5,199m) and Nelion(5,188m). The two are mainly for visitors interested in technical climbing activities. The third point is Lenana(4,984m). The scenery and ecological formations surrounding this World Heritage site are breathtakingly beautiful.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the largest Black Rhino Sanctuary in East Africa and home to 2 of the World’s last remaining Northern White Rhinos.
It is the only place in Kenya to see Chimpanzees is a sanctuary established to rehabilitate animals rescued from the black market. The conservation of the natural habitat, located in Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau ensured the protection of the existing Rhino, Elephants and other wildlife populations in addition to captive chimpanzees living in a 300-acre sanctuary. It has some of the highest predator densities in Kenya and still manages a very successful livestock program.
The Conservancy seeks to support the people living around its borders to ensure wildlife conservation translates to better education, health care and infrastructure for the next generation of wildlife guardians. Safari by vehicle is not the only option at Ol Pejeta. Safari game walks, horse rides and even camel rides are available, as well as safari night drives.
Samburu National Reserve is located in northern Kenya along Ewaso Nyiro river and its one of the most famous safari destinations in East Africa. It is a unique wildlife conservation haven famous for an abundance of rare species of animals such as the Grevy’s Zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx.
The reserve is also home to a population of close to 900 elephants. Large predators such as the lion, leopard, and cheetah are an important attraction (Kamunyak the miracle lioness that adopted the baby Oryx is a resident in the reserve).
It is in fact one of the best locations in Kenya to spot a Leopard. It is also a common attraction sitting of Wild Dogs and the unique protected area hosts over 450 birdlife species.
Aberdare National Park was established in 1950 with an aim to conserve and protect the Aberdare Mountains. The Park is best known as the sites where Princes Elizabeth became queen after the death of her father King George VI whilst staying at Treetops Hotel.
The Park contains a wide-range of landscapes – from Mountain Peaks that raise to 400 metres above sea level, to their deep V-shapes valleys intersected by streams, rivers and waterfalls.
Moorland Bamboo Forests and Rainforests are found at lower elevations. Wildlife present in the protected area include; Lion, Leopard, Elephants, East African Wild Dogs, Giant Forest Hog, Bushbucks, Mountain Reedbucks, Waterbucks, Cape Buffalos, Suni, Side Stripped Jackal, Eland, Duiker, Olive Baboon, Black and White Colobus and Sykes Monkeys.
Rarer sittings include those of an African Golden Cat and the Bongo. Species such as the common Eland live in the higher moorlands. The Aberdare National Park also hosts a large Eastern Rhinoceros population and over 250 bird species; including the Jackson’s Francolin, Sparrow hawks, goshawks, eagles, sunbirds and plovers.
The national reserve is located in South-west Kenya and borders Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Maasai Mara is a unique wildlife conservation haven famous for its spectacular natural diversity of wildlife and it’s the premier Kenya safari location in East Africa.
Large numbers of lions, cheetah, elephant, rhino, African buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra and many more are found in reserve in their natural habitat confined and free to roam the vast Kenyan wilderness stretching for miles.
Maasai Mara is also the sites of the annual Wildebeest simply known as the Great Migration. It is famous for this migration during which large herds of millions plus wildebeest, zebra and other wild animals including the big cats migrate north into the reserve from Serengeti National Park. This takes place between July to mid-September and involves dangerous crossings through crocodile-infested rivers.
Amboseli National Park is in southern Kenya. It’s known for its large Elephant Herds and views of immense snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania.
Observation Hill offers panoramas of the peak and the park’s plains and swamps. Varied wildlife includes; giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and hundreds of bird’s species. The western section, is dominated by vast Lake Amboseli which is dry outside the rainy season.
The park is one of the close protected areas to the capital city; Nairobi. The park is endorsed by a wide range of tourist attractions and this has made the park one of the most popular national parks not only in Kenya but entire Africa.
Tsavo West National Park, like its counter-part Tsavo East National Park, are the two National Parks that form the great Tsavo National Park. It is known as Land of Lava, Springs, Man-Eaters & Magical Sunsets. Its popularity is based on the Man-Eating Lions that killed hundreds of people during the Railway construction and the highway during the colonial era.
It’s the second largest National Park in Kenya and separated from Tsavo East by the A109 Highway that connects Nairobi to Mombasa. It’s also home for over 50 million gallons of crystal clear water that comes from of crystal clear water that comes out from the under parched lava rock.
The park is more scenic than Tsavo East National Park with rugged mountainous areas. The Mzima Springs and the Shetani Lava Flows are unique attractions found in the park.
The park is adjoining the great wildlife ranches where Black and White Rhinos are found. It’s a home of all Africa’s Big Game especially the Africa Big Five which include; Lions, Elephants, Buffalos, Rhino and the shy elusive Leopard. Other Big game found here are; giraffes, zebras, hyenas, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, gerenuk, lesser kudu, waterbucks, wildebeests, bird’s species and more others.
Tsavo East National Park covers a semi-arid area previously known as the Taru Desert located south-east of Kenya near the Voi Town in the Taita Taveta District of Coastal Province.
The park is home to most of the larger mammal, vast herds of dust-red elephants, buffalos, rhinos, pods of hippos, crocodile, waterbucks, lesser kudu, generuk and the prolific-bird life features 500 recorded species.
The slightly larger Tsavo East, is generally flat with dry plains across which the Galana River flows. Other features include the Yatta Plateau and Lugard Falls making it a “Theatre of the Wild”.
Mombasa is a coastal city located in the southern part of Kenya along the Indian Ocean. It was the first capital of the British East Africa, before Nairobi was elevated to capital status in 1907.
Being at the Kenyan coast, the notable attractions include sandy beaches, a port, kilindini harbor, likoni ferry, fort Jesus, old town, re-known hotels, standard gauge railway and parks such as Haller Park, Mamba Village, Shimba Hills, Arabuko Sokoke and Marine Parks including Mombasa Marine Park, Malindi Marine Park, Watamu Marine Park and Kisite Mpunguni Marine Park.
Mombasa has an International Airport therefore being accessible by road, rail and air.
Founded in 1979, Giraffe Centre is located 20 kilometers from Nairobi City Centre. Its home to the endangered Rothschild Giraffe.
The main attraction for both school children and visitors is feeding giraffes from a raised observation platform. The Giraffe Center is also home to several warthogs which freely roam the area along with the giraffes.
Founded in 1946, the park is the oldest in Kenya and the only one located in the capital city of Kenya: Nairobi City. It is fenced and allows the vast wildlife freely giving a picturesque experience for photographers.
It’s also the host of the famous Nairobi Orphanage that has caged wildlife, the Nairobi Safari Walk that has a walk way that allows guests view wildlife and finally Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage that allows guests interact with Orphaned elephants and support them.
Karen Blixen was established by the famous Danish Author Karen Blixen and her husband. It’s located at Karen just 10 km from Nairobi at the foot of the “Ngong Hills”
It’s also full and rich of history and famous for the book Out of Africa which chronicles life at the estate.
The Nairobi Museum was established in 1910 by a group of East African Naturalists and located at the heart of Nairobi City.
